中秋賞月吃月餅 英文怎麼說？

今年閏六月，所以中秋來得特別晚。中秋節的英文怎麼說？Mid-Autumn Festival！相信許多學過英文的朋友都能不假思索就脫口而出，畢竟這是我們課本裡的標準答案，而且英文又緊貼著中文的詞序（中 “mid” + 秋 “autumn” + 節 “festival”），背過之後就不容易忘掉。

是的，中秋節的英文可以是 Mid-Autumn Festival，不過在英語世界裡，Moon Festival（月亮節）似乎用得更為普遍。世界最大（20 巨冊）、最權威的英文詞典《牛津英語詞典》（Oxford English Dictionary，簡稱 OED）收錄了 Moon Festival，卻沒有收錄我們認為理所當然的標準答案 Mid-Autumn Festival，OED 對中秋節的定義如下，中譯為我所做，本文他處亦同：

Moon Festival  n.  (in China and Chinese communities elsewhere) a festival celebrated in mid-autumn on the fifteenth night of the eighth moon of the Chinese year, originally a family gathering after completion of the harvest. 【中秋節〈名〉（在中國及其他華人地區）一個在農曆 8 月 15 日晚上仲秋時分慶祝的節日，原本是農作物收成後的家族聚會。】

OED 收錄了一條書證（quotation，書面的例證），講的是杭州西湖的三潭印月，摘自美國百餘年的知名雜誌《大西洋》（The Atlantic）：Candles are placed inside three pagodas on the main lake..for the Moon Festival.【中秋節時，主湖上的三個塔里放有蠟燭。】

另外一部《英語牛津詞典》（Oxford Dictionary of English）與 OED 截然不同，為牛津旗下最大的單冊當代英文詞典，同樣收錄了 Moon Festival，卻也不見 Mid-Autumn Festival。這個情況，在以英語學習者為訴求、中型的《牛津高階學習詞典》（Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary）裡，也是如此。

唯一收錄 Mid-Autumn Festival 的英文詞典，據我所知只有《柯林斯英語詞典》（Collins English Dictionary）。它同時收錄了 Mid-Autumn Festival 和 Moon Festival，不過 Moon Festival 只是個 “參見”（cross-reference），要讀者前去 Mid-Autumn Festival 以獲取更多的資訊，而 Mid-Autumn Festival 才是個有完整定義的詞條：

Mid-Autumn Festival  noun  a Chinese festival that is held to celebrate the end of the summer harvest, when the crops have been gathered. 【中秋節〈名詞〉農作物收割後，慶祝夏收結束的一個中國節日。】

由西方世界觀之，中秋節的英文以 Moon Festival 最為常見，焦點在月亮，許多牛津家族的大小詞典均有收錄。國人的標準答案 Mid-Autumn Festival 也行，側重的是時節，不過收錄的詞典要少得多，僅見於《柯林斯英語詞典》。

過中秋，月餅是必不可少的節慶美食。月餅的英文就是由中文直譯的 mooncake（或拼作 moon cake、moon-cake），許多英文詞典均有收錄，並清楚交代了這個中文的源頭。茲舉《美國傳統英語詞典》（The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language）為例：

mooncake also moon cake  n.  A small dense pastry filled with bean paste, ground lotus seeds, or other ingredients, traditionally eaten during the Chinese moon festival. [Translation of Mandarin yuèbǐng (yuè, moon + bǐng, flatbread, cake) and its equivalents in other varieties of Chinese.] 【月餅〈名〉一種小而緊實的糕點，有餡，包豆沙、蓮蓉、或其他成分，傳統上在中秋節前後食用。[譯自國語及其他漢語方言的 “月餅” ]】

月餅的餡（filling）花樣繁多，令人眼花撩亂，不過常見的幾種及其英譯，我綜合各家，歸納建議如下：

豆沙  bean paste

蓮蓉  lotus seed paste（或 ground lotus seeds）

棗泥  jujube paste

伍仁  five kernel（或 five smashed nuts）

蛋黃  yolk（或 egg yolk）

豆沙蛋黃  yolk and bean paste（或 bean paste with yolk）

蓮蓉蛋黃  yolk and lotus seed paste（或 lotus seed paste with yolk）

棗泥蛋黃  yolk and jujube paste（jujube paste with yolk）

伍仁蛋黃  yolk and five kernel（five kernel with yolk）

鮮肉  minced pork

月餅餡多是甜的（sweet），如豆沙、蓮蓉、棗泥，也有鹹的（savory，或拼為 savoury），如上海的鮮肉月餅，吃起來的感覺就像是酥皮肉包子。蛋黃月餅一般只有一個蛋黃（a yolk），不過也有雙黃（two yolks 或 double yolk）的，甚至還有膽固醇可能破表的四黃（four yolks 或 quadruple yolk），令人咋舌。

月餅是深具中華文化特色的美食，除了統稱的 mooncake 有定論之外，其他各式月餅的英文翻譯，經常因人而異。因此，這些各式的月餅我建議先以漢語拼音轉寫，再適度地逐字翻譯。以 “雙黃蓮蓉月餅” 為例，可先轉寫為 shuanghuang lianrong yuebing，既彰顯了文化主體性，也能精確傳達資訊，減少因英文字詞接近而產生的誤讀誤解。音譯之後，再附上意譯，如 double yolk and lotus seed paste mooncake。當然，如上下文清楚，月餅的 mooncake 在此可以省略，double yolk and lotus seed paste 就可代表雙黃蓮蓉月餅，如 I’d like a double yolk and lotus seed paste.（我想要個雙黃蓮蓉）。

常有人把伍仁翻成 five kernel，文法似有問題（kernel 為可屬名詞，複數卻沒加 s），不過這個業界似已約定俗成。若要說 “我不喜歡伍仁的”，英文不妨說 “I hate five kernel.”。

月餅的餅皮英文說 crust，最常見的是廣式（Cantonese-style）月餅的漿皮，口感軟綿（chewy）。另外，蘇式（Suzhou-style）月餅的酥皮也比較有特色，口感酥鬆（flaky）。

當然，中秋節不只有吃月餅（eating mooncakes），賞月也是重頭戲。賞月的英文有不同的表達，可用 enjoy the moon、admire the moon、watch the moon，倘若要特別強調賞的是 “滿月”，可以在 moon 之前加個 full：enjoy the full moon、admire the full moon、watch the full moon。

在台灣，柚子（pomelo）是中秋時節的時令水果，常作為祭祀、餽贈之用。近年來，台灣的中秋節更是流行烤肉（barbecue，或 cookout），月餅的地位反而大幅滑落。

中秋節這一天月亮滿圓，象徵團圓，也是家庭團圓（family reunion）的日子。天涯共此時，千里共嬋娟。親愛的朋友，你現在是否與家人團聚，吃著月餅，仰望夜空的一輪明月？
