「賞月」的英文怎麼說？

兩個禮拜前，牛津大學出版社中國分公司從香港給我寄來了他們剛出版的新書──The Oxford Chinese Dictionary《牛津英漢漢英詞典》。這部單卷本的英漢漢英雙語 (bilingual) 雙向 (bidirectional) 詞典，是目前市面上同類產品中規模最大的，內容令人期待，待我空閒時再好好研究。

前些日子適逢中秋，一時興起便隨手翻閱本詞典漢英部分的相關詞條。「中秋節」它還是譯為一般漢英詞典常見的 Mid-Autumn Festival，而不見自家兩本詞典所收錄的 Moon Festival，主編的取捨之間，實在是令人費疑猜。翻到了「月餅」，它內含的文化知識框 (cultural note) 還進一步告訴讀者，中秋的習俗是邊吃月餅「邊賞月」(while appreciating the moon)。主編把這個「賞月」翻譯成 appreciate the moon，真讓人大惑不解，於是我趕緊翻出牛津自家的高階學習詞典 Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, 8th edition (2010)，《牛八》的 appreciate 是這樣定義的：

第一個定義最接近「賞月」的「賞」，但根據《牛津搭配詞典》Oxford Collocations Dictionary for Students of English, 2nd edition (2009) 所述，appreciate 這個動詞之後一般是不接「月亮」這種語義類別為「風景」(scenery)、「景色」(view) 的名詞的。我續查這本《牛津英漢漢英詞典》的「賞月」，主編採用的是 enjoy the moon，這也是英國著名漢學家、牛津大學教授霍克斯 (David Hawkes) 翻譯《紅樓夢》所採取的搭配。求證於《牛津搭配詞典》，enjoy 這個動詞一般也能後接「風景」和「景色」這兩個義類，因此把「賞月」譯為 enjoy the moon 是個正規的作法。

把「賞月」譯為 appreciate the moon 不妥，我想可能肇因於這個「賞」字。「賞」字一般理解為「欣賞」，除了前述的 appreciate 和 enjoy 之外，admire 同樣可用。根據《牛津搭配詞典》，admire 作「欣賞」解時後接的名詞搭配與 enjoy 有交集，也都有「風景」和「景色」這兩個義類，因此若將「賞月」譯成 admire the moon，理當亦可。

我用英文版的 Google 做簡單的求證，把 "enjoy the moon"、"admire the moon"、"appreciate the moon" 加雙引號搜尋，並同時採計動詞原形、加 -ed、加 -ing、加 –s 搜尋後的筆數，共得數據如下："ENJOY the moon" 最多，達 24.5 萬筆，"ADMIRE the moon" 次之，有 10.47 萬筆，"APPRECIATE the moon" 最少，只有 3.1 萬筆 (2010/9/26 搜尋所得)。

所以「賞月」的英文該怎麼說呢？根據以上的綜合分析判斷，我們首推 enjoy the moon，其次是 admire the moon。《牛津英漢漢英詞典》「月餅」條下所提供的 appreciate the moon，我們就敦請主編再行斟酌了。
